About Us

The Shirley Community Development Corporation (CDC), founded in 1988, is a community-based organization formed to plan and initiate short and long-term development programs for Shirley, Arkansas and the surrounding communities. These programs focus on economic development, educational enhancement, computer and business classes, youth job training and service projects that improve and strengthen the community. The Shirley CDC is recognized as a tax exempt 501(c)(3) organization.

The Shirley CDC is involved in projects that research and demonstrate the skills and techniques needed for production and marketing of specialty, agricultural crops. The present focus is on log-grown Shiitake mushrooms. This growing industry is uniquely suited to our climate, hardwood forests and skills of the local people. Workshops, mushroom supplies and marketing assistance are offered regularly. The Shirley CDC also hosts tours which offer in-depth information about Shiitake production and marketing. Recent additions to our activities include on-site production of garden bricks and stepping stones, raised bed herbal plots, twin wall polycarbonate greenhouse, USDA funded compost demonstration project (for use as a soil amendment), and an ultra modern computer training lab/repair service.

Our success in these projects depends on the efforts of a dedicated staff and the participation of board members, local residents and professionals, who provide invaluable hours of volunteer time to support our programs. We strive to demonstrate what is innovative and possible in rural Arkansas and rural America.
